Our Spring ‘13 YSOA Zaha Hadid Advanced Studio project IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHENXI GONG is a form finding study based on curved folding, investigated through a series of physical models. Paper, when folded according to curved folding patterns, creates object-like spatial volumes. Unfolded, the same paper with its creases obtains the quality of a field. By gradually unfolding the object, we blur the distinction, merging the object and field into a unified system.

On the Marmara waterfront site, we look at directionality, density, and landscape topography in response to the fluctuating water level datum. Throughout this process, the lines for the peak and valley folds become further refined in response to constraints provided by site and program. Finally, we develop an interior partition strategy for these large-scale shells based on tensile membranes, used as a flexible method for defining intimate spaces.
